The barriers have been drawn for the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast this Saturday, with early favourite Claudia Jean scoring the inside run from barrier one.
After impressively winning the Christmas Season Plate (1000m) by three and a half lengths on debut in December, the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained filly was the $5.50 favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au.
Although the filly has yet to be tested over 1200m or on a clockwise track, scoring a start from barrier one has given her a boost to win the richest summer race.
Hayes & Dabernig will also saddle Miss Idyllic in Saturday’s race, however the filly will have to overcome a wide start from barrier 19 (into 14 if the emergencies are scratched). The trainers were quietly confident of her chances given the filly has the benefit of running the TAB Place Multi Plate (1100m) in the clockwise direction but a wide draw is a hindrance.
Wicked Intent was $6 second favourite in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic betting before the barrier draw and will jump from barrier five.
Barry Mitchell’s colt won his first three starts including the Listed Phelan Ready Stakes (1050m) at Doomben Racecourse on December 13 before finishing runner-up in the Group 3 BJ McLachlan Plate (1200m) on December 27 – his first test over the distance of the Classic and against tougher rivals.
Gai Waterhouse’s Carriages has become the forgotten runner of the 2015 Magic Millions Classic after a leg injury caused the filly to miss the Listed Calaway Gal Stakes (1050m) after dominating the Magic Millions Clockwise Classic (1000m) back in November. Her chances haven’t been made any better after scoring the widest barrier.
Of Liam Birchley’s three runners, Flamenco is the trainer’s best chance after drawing the second barrier. The two-year-old filly won the Calaway Gal Stakes a nose ahead of rival Flamenco Girl despite being hampered at the start.
Rounding out Birchley’s three-pronged attack is Saga Of The Storm, who will jump from barrier 10, and Pepperano, who will jump from barrier 17.
Saga Of The Storm won the Brisbane Marriott Hotel QTIS Handicap (1110m) by one length last time out while Pepperano won the Capture The Feeling QTIS Handicap (1110m) before missing out on a placing in the Magic Millions QTIS Plate (1050m).
