January 8th, 2015

With prizemoney totaling $400,000, the Magic Millions Cup (1400m) is sure to be a hotly-contested race at the Gold Coast this Saturday.

A near-capacity field of 14 mile-sprinters will line-up in the race, for which Chris Waller’s Strawberry Boy is the $3.70 favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au.

The six-year-old gelding will jump from barrier one with Damian Browne in the saddle, carrying 59kg which is just under the top weight.

Strawberry Boy is in-form after managing to place in all three of his starts this campaign. The gelding won the Listed Ladies Day Cup (1400m) first up before finishing third in both the Listed Festival Stakes (1500m) and Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m).

Trainer Gai Waterhouse will deliver a dual-pronged attack on the race in the form of Driefontein and Spurtonic, who will start the race in neighbouring stalls (10 & 11).

Five-year-old mare Driefontein is the $5.50 second favourite in the 2015 Magic Millions Cup betting, despite carrying the top weight of 59.5kg. She has run in twelve black-type races since winning the Magic Millions Fillies & Mares Handicap (1300m) last year, including the Group 1 Robert Sangster Classic (1200m) which she won and the Group 2 Tab.com.au Stakes (1200m) that she finished runner-up in.

The mare was last seen running sixth in the Listed Canterbury Classic (1200m) on December 27, where she tried hard but never looked the winner.

Stablemate Spurtonic is a $13 shot after a very lightly raced season. The five-year-old gelding won the Group 3 David Jones Cup (2000m) back in October 2013 before finishing dead last in the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) five months later.

After being spelled for eight months, Spurtonic returned to run fifth of seven in the Filante Handicap (1500m) on October 25. He urged up to find the front and held on to the lead into the straight before dropping away. The gelding has won two of his three barrier trials since then and looks ready to return to the top spot on Saturday.

Other single figure hopefuls for the Magic Millions Cup include The Bowler ($6), Phelan Ready ($7), and Harada Bay ($9.50).

Last start winner The Bowler will jump from barrier five with Brenton Avdulla to ride while Phelan Ready will enjoy an inside run from barrier two.
