Nearly half the field is offering single figure odds in the betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au to win the $200,000 sprint race. Whittington ($3.60) and Missy Longstocking ($3.70) are currently vying for favouritism.

The Chris Waller-trained Whittington will have to overcome a start from the widest gate with Hugh Bowman to ride but still opened the odds as favourite since the four-year-old entire took out the Magic Millions Open Sprint this time last year, pocketing a cool $126,000.

The entire’s form is not as good leading into this year’s race but punters have yet to give up on the defending champion.

Whittington has run more barrier trials than races in the past six months as connections try to get the entire back to a peak level of fitness. He has finished midfield in all five of his starts since last year’s Magic Millions, just missing out on placings in races such as the Group 1 Galaxy (1100m) and Myer Spring Fashion Handicap (1400m).

Liam Birchley’s Missy Longstocking will jump from barrier nine with Glen Colless to ride.

The four-year-old mare will make her return to racing after finding herself sidelined following last year’s Magic Millions Race Day.

Missy Longstocking won the Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes (1200m) and placed in the Listed Mode Plate (1200m) and Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate (1350m) at the end of 2013 which earned her a place in the field for the $1 million Magic Millions Guineas (1400m). Despite finishing 11th of 16 runners, the mare was just six and a half lengths behind winner Sweet Idea.

She has not been since in the year since and punters are excited for her return.

Rounding out the single figure odds for the 2015 Magic Millions Open Sprint are Excellantes and Seeking More at $6 and Straturbo at $8.

Robert Heathcote’s Excellantes will carry the top weight of 58.5kg after winning the Listed Hinkler Quality (1200m) and Listed Ascot Handicap (1200m) as well as placing in the Madame Wu Handicap (1200m).

The seven-year-old gelding will jump from barrier five while Seeking More has scored the inside jump from barrier one.

Kelso Wood’s five-year-old finished just outside the placings in last year’s sprint race before going on to place in the Group 3 WJ Healy Stakes (1200m).

Gary Portelli’s Straturbo will jump from barrier 12 with James McDonald to ride.
