Deiheros Scores Upset 2015 Magic Millions Guineas Result

January 12th, 2015

In a day full of upsets a $26 outsider was able to beat home a field of better fancied rivals in Saturday’s Magic Millions 3YO Guineas 2015 on the Gold Coast with the Lloyd Kennewell-trained Adelaide raider Deiheros stealing the show.

Winner of the Magic Millions Adelaide 2YO Classic two runs into his career last March, the Bon Hoffa gelding added another Magic Millions win to his record with his lucrative victory in the $820,000 Gold Coast $1 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m).

Now a winner of five of his 11 starts, Deiheros has won an impressive $740,997 in prize money – huge earnings for a galloper snapped up for just $6,500 from the MM Sales.

We paid $6,500 for him in Adelaide,” his young trainer Kennewell said after the win.

“Good to see those (cheaper) horses win for the battlers a few times.”

Deiheros, ridden by Ric McMahon, relished the Good (4) conditions at the Gold Coast on the weekend after failing to let down on a Slow (7) at the track a fortnight earlier when 10th to Mywayorthehighway in the Group3 Vo Rogue Plate (1300m).

“He really didn’t handle the track the other day,” Kennewell added on Saturday.

“He didn’t have much luck and did everything wrong.

“Basically the horse had a few gear changes…and it worked beautifully (today).”

In the Guineas the tongue tie went on and by the finish he had two lengths to spare over the Gary Portelli-trained Testashadow ($8) while the Gai Waterhouse-trained Echo Gal ($10) finished a long neck further back for third after leading on the straight.

McMahon gave the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas winner an excellent ride just off the speed set by the Wyong Magic Millions 3YO Stakes winner Aerobar who had to go forward from an inside alley.

Echo Gal hit the front with 700m left to travel, Deiheros sitting fourth on the fence gearing up for a late burst.

He took the shortcut and had the speed coming up the inside to balance up and win running away over the last 200m in a blanket finish for the Guineas where only three lengths separated the first eight over the line.

“The last 200 metres was good,” Kennewell said.

“It was a good win and a great ride by Ricky McMahon…a beautiful ride.

“It was effortless. It was beautiful and that’s what we’re here for.”

“That’s right up there with winning the Adelaide Cup for the same owner.

“Good to get a winner for him.”

McMahon was also pleased with the victory, happy for Deiheros to show the improvement from last start he knew was in him.

“He done everything right today,” McMahon said on Saturday.

“The other day he got on his wrong leg.

“I thought he was a chance today without being an over-the-line job.

“I felt as though he improved a lot and he did a really good job so hopefully he can go onto bigger and better things.”
