Neville Layt’s boom two-year-old filly Karuta Queen maintained her unbeaten record at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Race Day on Saturday January 15, scoring another dominant victory in the 2011 Magic Millions 2YO Classic.

A daughter of Not A Single Doubt Karuta Queen did one better than her sire, Not A Single Doubt finishing second to Dance Hero in the 2004 Magic Millions 2YO showdown, leading from start to finish in the day’s $2 million feature to bring her career record up to four wins from four starts for an impressive $1,414,000 in total prize money.

Karuta Queen hadn’t raced since taking out the Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic on December 5 but proved the lengthy time between starts had done nothing to dull her form, the clear $3.50 favourite never challenged as she raced away to beat $14 roughie Combat Kitty by three lengths with Schiffer ($5.50) in third.

It was the second successive year the Magic Millions 2YO Classic Trifecta featured all all-filly finish after Military Grace, Ambers Waltz and Demanding Miss placed one, two, three in the 1200m sprint 12 months ago.

The $3.5million Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill on April 2 is the next big race target for Karuta Queen as she aims to become just the third horse in history to complete the Magic Millions Classic – Golden Slipper double along with Phelan Ready (2008) and Dance Hero (2004).

On Saturday January 15 the 2011 Gold Coast Magic Millions Race Day took place at the Gold Coast Racecourse and in the fifth race of the day, the $328,000 Magic Millions Cup (1400m), Bold Glance claimed an upset win.

The Norm Hilton-trained Bold Glance ($16) was one of a number of Toowoomba gallopers that enjoyed success at this year’s Magic Millions Carnival, the Sequalo gelding putting in a massive effort to chase down classy mare Zero Rock ($4.60) and claim the prize with a narrow victory.

Magic Millions Cup favourite Captain Sonador ($3.50) was not disgraced finishing a close third in a photo finish with second placegetter Zero Rock.

It was a thrilling finish with a number of horses right at the line fighting for a top three finish and the closeness of the field saw fifth placegetter Fifteen Carat ($7) bump into another runner and fall to the ground along with mount Craig Williams.

Both horse and jockey escaped without any serious injury.

With the Magic Millions Race Day done and dusted for another year, Aussie punters are gearing up for the elite Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival action so make sure you have an account with online bookmaker Luxbet to get the best odds on all the Group 1 autumn features!

On Saturday $51 outsider Beethog caused a stir when she claimed a shock victory in the $125,000 Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m).

Trained by Les Kelly, the lightly raced local filly showed her love for the Gold Coast track and her ability to step up to Group level as she went strongly to the line to deny Temple Of Boom ($5) by a long neck in the final few strides, with Fifteen Carat ($21) just a half-head back to finish a gallant third after coming from a wide barrier.

It was dead heat for fourth as Phelan Ready ($12) and the $4 favourite, the Chris Waller-trained Stryker crossed the line together ahead of Deer Valley ($5.50).

Despite the fourth place finish, it was an impressive run for last year’s Golden Slipper winner Phelan Ready who had his run hampered by a wide barrier draw.

There were 15 starters in the Guineas after four of the five emergencies didn’t get a start and Latin News and Spot On Target were also scratched.

The Bart Cummings-trained Latin News’s scratching allowed emergency Editave to gain a start, while Spot On Target was a late scratching at the barriers.

Beethog, a three-year-old Shovhog filly, has now won three of her seven career starts, running second in another two, and has secured $114,650 in prizemoney.

It was an all Queensland top three in the Guineas unlike in the other feature race of the day, the $300,000 Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m) where Sydney runners Metal Bender, Road To Rock and Gold Water denied the locals.

Hollindale Stakes Day was the sole Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival meeting held at the Gold Coast, with the action now moving up to Doomben and Eagle Farm.

On Saturday Metal Bender became a million dollar earner when he claimed victory in the $300,000 Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m), beating home the hot favourite, Anthony Cummings’ Road To Rock.

The Chris Waller-trained Metal Bender ($5) settled behind the pacemakers early on and then charged down Gold Water, who was leading on the straight, to claim victory over the last 200m.

Trained by Gai Waterhouse, Gold Water ($5.50) fought with Road To Rock ($1.90) for second, and was eventually nudged out by a short-head by the last start Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner in a thrilling photo finish.

Road To Rock had a horror run settling towards the back of the pack before jockey Stathi Katsidis had to run him up the inside on the rails, where the ground was chopped up. It was a gallant effort by the Encosta De Lago gelding who came within 1 ¼ lengths of the leader in the end.

A four-year-old son of Danasinga, Metal Bender’s win saw his total career earnings skyrocket to $1,039,950 as he claimed his sixth win from 12 starts.

The top three Hollindale Stakes winners are all Sydney-trained gallopers and will meet again when they run in the coveted $500,000 Group 1 Doomben Cup (2020m) on May 22.

In the other scheduled highlight at the meeting on Saturday, Beethog claimed an upset win in the $125,000 Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m), the $51 chance beating home a classy field of rivals.
